How to Plan Christmas Dinner With AI in 10 Minutes (Copy My Prompts)

Planning Christmas dinner usually goes like this: open twelve recipe tabs, forget what’s already in the fridge, buy three jars of cinnamon you didn’t need, and start cooking way too late. AI can’t peel your potatoes (yet), but it can do all the boring thinking for you in about 10 minutes.

Here’s exactly how to plan a complete Christmas dinner with ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or any AI chatbot, with prompts you can copy and paste.

Why Let AI Plan It?

AI is great at the parts of holiday cooking that drain your brain:

  • Turning a vague idea into a menu. “Something cozy, not too fancy, for 8 people” becomes an actual list of dishes.
  • Scaling recipes. Doubling a recipe for 10 guests? It does the math.
  • Making the shopping list. Sorted by store section, so you don’t zigzag through the aisles.
  • Building a timeline. What to cook two days before, the morning of, and the hour before guests arrive.

You stay in charge. AI just does the planning homework.

How to Plan Christmas Dinner With AI in 10 Minutes

Step 1: Give It the Real Details

The more honest you are, the better the plan. Copy this and fill in the brackets:

Prompt: “I’m hosting Christmas dinner for [number] people, including [number] kids. One guest is [vegetarian / gluten-free / allergic to nuts]. I have [an oven, an air fryer and a multicooker]. I don’t love cooking, so I want easy recipes with simple ingredients and as much make-ahead as possible. My budget is about [amount]. Suggest a Christmas dinner menu with one main, three sides, one appetizer and one dessert.”

Mentioning your appliances matters. AI will spread the cooking between them, so your oven isn’t doing everything at once.

Step 2: Make It Lazier

The first menu is often too ambitious. Push back:

Prompt: “Make this easier. Replace any dish that takes more than 30 minutes of hands-on time with a shortcut version. Store-bought ingredients are fine.”

You’ll suddenly see things like store-bought puff pastry, frozen meatballs and a no-bake dessert. That’s the menu you actually want.

Step 3: Get One Combined Shopping List

Prompt: “Create one combined shopping list for the whole menu, grouped by store section: produce, meat, dairy, bakery, frozen, pantry. Combine duplicate ingredients and show total amounts. Mark the items I probably already have, like salt, oil and flour, so I can check before buying.”

Copy the list into your phone’s notes app and check items off as you shop.

Step 4: Build the Timeline

This is the part that saves Christmas Day.

Prompt: “Dinner is at [time] on December 25. Make a cooking timeline starting two days before. Include what can be made ahead and how to store it, what to do the morning of, and an hour-by-hour plan for the afternoon. Tell me exactly when to use the oven, the air fryer and the multicooker so they’re never needed for two things at once.”

Print it and stick it on the fridge. Now you’re not thinking, just following.

Step 5: Ask for the Recipes in Simple Steps

Prompt: “Write the recipe for [dish] for [number] people in short, simple steps. Use cups and tablespoons, include temperatures in both °F and °C, and tell me how to know when it’s done.”

Ask for one recipe at a time. Long answers with five recipes at once get messy and hard to follow while you cook.

Step 6: Plan for the Leftovers

Prompt: “Suggest three easy meals I can make from the leftovers of this menu on December 26 and 27, with no extra shopping.”

Christmas leftovers are half the fun. You can also find air fryer ideas in our Thanksgiving leftovers guide, and most of them work just as well with Christmas ham or turkey.

A Sample Lazy Christmas Menu

Here’s the kind of menu AI comes up with after a “make it easier” prompt, for 8 people:

  • Appetizer: cranberry brie bites in the air fryer
  • Main: glazed spiral ham, already cooked, just warmed through
  • Side 1: creamy mashed potatoes in the multicooker
  • Side 2: honey garlic carrots in the air fryer
  • Side 3: bagged salad with pomegranate seeds and toasted pecans
  • Dessert: chocolate bark with crushed candy canes, made two days before

Things AI Gets Wrong (and How to Catch Them)

AI is a great assistant, but it’s not perfect. Double check these:

  • Cooking temperatures for meat. Always use a thermometer. Poultry needs 165°F (74°C), and already-cooked ham is usually reheated to 140°F (60°C). Check the label on the package.
  • Cooking times. Every oven and air fryer runs a little different. Treat times as a starting point and check early.
  • Quantities. Sometimes the math goes weird when scaling. If 8 people somehow need 6 pounds of butter, ask again.
  • Allergies. Read every ingredient label yourself when cooking for someone with an allergy. Don’t rely on AI alone.

A quick “Double check this recipe for mistakes in amounts, times and temperatures” prompt catches a surprising number of errors.
